THE NOVEMBERS - mer

Lyrics: Yusuke Kobayashi
Music: THE NOVEMBERS
Kanji: J-Lyric
Romaji/Translation: plastic_rainbow

Kanji:

English:
I'll eat the things you breathe out[1]
I wonder why you don't understand that
Everything that happens inside your skin
Is so beautiful
Please let me touch it
Don't wash away like a bubble

In a winter amusement park, our young selves
Crashed into each other with go-carts
Inside the winter ferris wheel, our young selves
Searched for a place to grow old
But really, there is no such thing

I wonder if our bodies will be able to peel off
Because we want to stay in our bareness
Let's hide here

We'll gaze at the aurora in a warm bath
And I'll kiss your cold back
I want to eat the things you breathe out
Why can't I reach you?
Just like a lie, I can't reach you

I don't know what
The color of blood is
If you slip out of
A sterilized room

I wonder if we'll lose sight of each other someday
Because I want to stay bare like this
Let's hide here

If
I were to wake up
Good morning to you
Where shall we go
From now on?
If it rains
I'll hold an umbrella
And without getting drenched
The two of us
Will walk onward

Where shall we go
From now on?
--------------------------------
Notes:
[1] Translated from 吐き出す(hakidasu), which literally means 'to spit out' or 'vomit', but I felt that sounded too vulgar so I decided to translate it as 'breathe out' to match the softness of the song.

THE NOVEMBERS - para

Lyrics: Yusuke Kobayashi
Music: THE NOVEMBERS
Kanji: J-Lyric
Romaji/Translation: plastic_rainbow

Kanji:
ありきたりな狂気の話は
いつも僕を歪める
ここから汽車に乗れる
そして忘れる

あたりまえだけど

うまく目を開けることが出来ない
耳をすませられない

Romaji:

English:
This ordinary crazy story
Always twists me up
I'll hop on a train from here
And forget about everything

Although that's pretty obvious

I can barely open my eyes
I can't listen to it

THE NOVEMBERS - keep me keep me keep me

Lyrics: Yusuke Kobayashi
Music: THE NOVEMBERS
Kanji source: j-lyric
Romaji/Translation: plastic_rainbow

Kanji:

English:
You will change me to who I should be
I think about the warmth of your fingers and words

Just one day, turn one day back again
Let's live for as long as we can
It becomes very dark if we close our eyes
There are too many options if we open our eyes
In the dense forest of restless madness
We don't know the way back home

Right now, I am kneeling
On the ground
My head was beaten
"Keep smiling if you want to stay here,"
A demon once said

It's raining vigorously outside now
Everything got washed away
And we were happy
Just one day, turn one day back again
In a mercury lamp
Let's become a chrysalis of blue times

Surely, the blue of the magnet
The lie of white anesthesia knows
So that my string does not become untied and scatter about
Though, I think it's already too late

I can't hold in all my mistakes
Atonement does not know where to place them
The truth is that no one is at fault
As someone once said

The things that will change you to who you should be
Your string will not become untied
So don't twist it up

It's all right
Let's fall into oblivion

Kanji:

Rain of Bolivia
On the white slope
Of your nakedness
I doze off
The cold surface
Of a soup of light
My way of life is

Like that of a bubble

A house for you and me
Milk-colored walls
Blue window frames
Pure things
On my shoulder
Lay the tip of your nose
As if to unwind

You let out a yawn

If you will not give
If you will not take away
I wonder if I can hide it
While it's still pure
If your tiny back
Splits open
And grows wings

Let me have a touch

THE NOVEMBERS - philia

Lyrics: Yusuke Kobayashi
Music: THE NOVEMBERS
Kanji source: j-lyric
Romaji/Translation: plastic_rainbow

Kanji: philia

English: philia
Crossing our favorite town
We both came to a far place
Having fun while joining hands
In the cold water like children

We both exposed our nakedness to each other

Let's lie down on the silver lawn
And curl up like an egg
Your milk colored breasts
Resemble the snow that is like a wish

I wonder how far we can go on like this
After hiding my emptiness
Without reflecting it in my eyes

In the sun
Tired from playing
Above the lawn
Laughing and laughing
I saw Godard[1]
The conception of Mary
I think I'm going crazy
The eyes of a Persian cat
I don't mind being hung upside down
I'll lose meaning
And my ears

From now on, I may forget all our happenings
It may not be recreated again
From now on, I want to slip out of the clock's second hand with you
Without anyone noticing

I knew that

THE NOVEMBERS - dnim

Lyrics: Yusuke Kobayashi
Music: THE NOVEMBERS
Kanji source: j-lyric

Kanji: dnim
僕の頭をとりまく樹海
そこから出ていくように
入っていくように
帰れそうで帰れない

止まればつかまり
走れば落ちそうな
ハーレムの中
裸ですらないさ
「見たいの?」
「剥がして」

フィルムの中で
石を投げつける人達と
「ここにいたいなら笑っていろ」
狂ってる

みんな何て言っているかわからない
みんな何で知っているかわからない

秒針と心臓の音を
赤いロウだけの皮膜で
愛しているだけ

The sea of trees that surrounds my head
To leave from there
To go in
I can't go back because I can

I'll get caught if I stop
I'm likely to fall if I run
Even in a harem
I'm not naked
"Wanna see?"
"Take it off"

In a layer of film
With people throwing stones at others
"Let's give a laugh if we want to stay here"
Going crazy

I don't know what everyone is saying
I don't know why everybody knows

Retaining the sound of the clock's second hand and heart
In a layer of film merely made of red wax
I only love you

THE NOVEMBERS - holy

Lyrics: Yusuke Kobayashi
Music: Yusuke Kobayashi

Kanji: holy

Thought about the little things
And thought that you could live with that
That's what you thought

Things went a little faster than planned
You began to mature
Your soft chest grew bigger
You began to grow out your hair
You stood at a different place far from me
I wonder what you were gazing at?

I thought about the little things

THE NOVEMBERS - 終わらない境界 (Owaranai kyoukai)

Lyrics: Yusuke Kobayashi
Music: Yusuke Kobayashi and Hirofumi Takamatsu

Kanji:

English: Endless Border
Driven apart, and looking away
Losing sight of each other, and meeting again
We bid farewell to see you later
When will we meet again?
Until then, please take care of yourself
And watch out for cars, they seem to speed often
By the way, did we not live in the same place?

With just a blink
And two sighs
I noticed it was night time
Stop indulging yourself in those kinds of things all the time
Whatever happens outside, someone pretends like they saw nothing
When I close the window, a light leaks through and I can hear a song

I wonder how you're doing?
I wonder why you need it?
The thing you desire
There are plenty of others aren't there?
Something you wish to see
You have something don't you?
I sure do

The me from here, it's you from here, this is the borderline
I'm still a little awake
There are things I wish to do

I wonder if you're already asleep
Good night, and sweet dreams
If it's sunny tomorrow
I'll do the "laundry"
A dream you wish to see
You have one don't you
I sure do
A place you desire to go to someday
Something you wish to eat someday
Something I wish to give you

THE NOVEMBERS - 日々の剥製 (Hibi no hakusei)

Lyrics: Yusuke Kobayashi
Music: Yusuke Kobayashi

Kanji:

English: Everyday Stuffed Essence[1]
There is no guarantee that a tomorrow awaits us
All we have is our prospects
Today isn't over yet
This side show won't end just yet
That's enough right about there
By the way, what kind of party is it today?

I won't resent, I won't envy, or detest
I won't hate or anything
Or much less, I won't love at all
We assimilate and lend you this day
So excessively it's crazy
I move aside, across the corridor
And say "no"
To "melt the brain"

It seems you have gone
To a world of past dreams, which I embraced every night terribly
These reasons gradually become less and less worthy
I saw it while taking the emergency staircase
One after another

Hey, quit wishing so much for sins
Don't leave such a mess in your room
Tidy up
The unbreakable jar of pills
The unjustified lynch of purification
"How about a charge for innocence?"
Okay, please stop talking already

There's no need to worry
It was so easy to notice I took the emergency staircase
One after another
I already arrived above the rubble long ago
The dream that I embraced every night terribly
Is right here

I will really begin it
I will begin the truth
The truth is beginning
The truth
Of truths will

------------------------------
Notes:
[1] 剥製(hakusei) essentially means stuffing, stuffed animal, or taxidermy, but I chose to translate it as "stuffed essence" because it puts the song title into better context and sounds more poetic.

THE NOVEMBERS - ニールの灰に (NEIL no hai ni)

Lyrics: Yusuke Kobayashi
Music: Yusuke Kobayashi

Kanji:

English: For Neil's Ashes
That's right
If we could do anything
It doesn't matter what happens
That lovely aurora-like candy
Is not good for your body
Don't worry
Just chew
Swallow or spit out
Either choose or don't choose

We were forgiven too many times
And we got used to forgiving
On top of countless painlessness
Don't approach the edge, or you'll get run over
Don't stiffen in shame, or you'll get pulled in
"It's painful in a lawful country"
Even though it can stop anytime
The exit is only an entrance

I made it out of blank white paper
A house without endings
The chrysalis is absent and hollow
"Again today, it resides immensely in a temporary me, it seems painful"
Even though it can stop anytime
The exit is certainly an entrance

THE NOVEMBERS - 瓦礫の上で (Gareki no ue de)

Lyrics: Yusuke Kobayashi
Music: Yusuke Kobayashi

Kanji:

English: Above the Rubble
Arriving at last
We stand above the rubble again
Look, we're at a loss
Like children
We
Still haven't played enough
Still haven't danced enough
What should we do, from here?
For chosen reasons
We've been chosen a new face
We contest with reasons of contest
"Oh, is that so."

Breathing in the morning air
I am walking alone now
Where should I go, tell me
It's incredibly noisy
It's incredibly delightful
That's right, it's painful here
You ought to choose yourself
For chosen reasons and stolen freedom
I realized it last night
This place is a meadow
This place will
Make me forget how to remember
And remember how to forget
And sooner or later, how to walk as well

Now we
Talk to each other, accept each other
Kill each other, forgive each other like so
And as usual
It falls through

Those reasons of contest and chosen freedom
The gathering meadow whose name was stolen
That place will
Make me forget how to remember
And remember how to forget
I have to learn how to walk quickly

THE NOVEMBERS - 彼岸で散る青 (Higan de chiru ao)

Lyrics: Yusuke Kobayashi
Music: THE NOVEMBERS

Kanji:

English: Falling Blue on the Other Side[1]
Beyond the window glass
Is not always the outside
If you want to go
You should go at once

The reason why it's hard to breathe
Is not because I'm in water
If you want to stay
You should stay forever

Starting to revolve
I remember now
Look, we were laughing together

I want to see the ocean
Look, one made of various colors
At the ocean of petals
Your smile was already covered in sugar

Starting to revolve
I remember now
Look, we were laughing together, right?

Your hair of someday
Was shorter than mine
It really suited you
And you resembled Jean Seberg[2]

The me of someday
Will be watching from there
Look, I'll get started
So listen to this song

Starting to revolve
I remember now
Look, we laughed together
I'm going to see you now

--------------------------
Notes:
[1] In the song title the word 彼岸 (higan) literally translates to "the other shore" which separates this life and the afterlife in Japanese Buddhist tradition. It is derived from Sanskrit and means "reaching nirvana", as written in short from with Chinese characters 到彼岸. However, in Japan today it refers to a Buddhist holiday celebrated in Japan during both the Spring and Autumnal Equinox where people visit graves and pay their respects. It is sometimes written as お彼岸(ohigan). I don't think the song particularly has a strong Buddhist meaning behind it so I translated the word as "on the other side".
[2] Jean Seberg was an American actress.

THE NOVEMBERS - 永遠の複製 (Eien no fukusei)

Lyrics: Yusuke Kobayashi
Music: Yusuke Kobayashi

Kanji:

English: Replicate Eternity
Before knowing it
We are placed in a replicated eternity
I have no doubts that today will end
I have no doubts that tomorrow will come
Be happy as you are told to be happy
Be sad as you are told to be sad
An angel's finger or leucotome[1]
It'll end soon, so bear with it

If God died all at once
If a fabricated God died

The installation of surveillance cameras
And those being monitored, will become things of night vision
I'll come back already, so don't worry
But don't stay relieved, until I come back

If God died all at once
If a fabricated God died

No one notices it even though it has begun
No one cares about it anyway
It failed as soon as it began
And there was an idiot looking for a reset button
The sugar that makes me dizzy
The bus tour to the seat of pleasure
Yet again, the exit leads to an entrance
It's a method filled with fictional sins
Since when did two fingers hold up a peace sign
It's a smiling angel writing out an "x"[2]

--------------------------------
Translation notes:
[1] Leucotome is a kind of surgical instrument.
[2] "x" is read as "batsu", which not only means "wrong", but can also mean "punishment".

THE NOVEMBERS - 37.2°

Lyrics: Yusuke Kobayashi
Music: Yusuke Kobayashi

Kanji: 37.2°

English: 37.2°
You carry the smell of rain in your hands
Blown by the wind with the performing trees
It gently strained my ears
I had the feeling that it called my name
The time when your yawn melts in the night
The time when my prayers drift in the sky
The time when flowers bloom sparsely in a field
We're already tired of waiting
"It will surely be beautiful, right?"
"I don't want it to be like this forever"
I can't stay at the same place until it wears out
I wonder if we'll have a separate dream again

Before knowing it, we came from somewhere
What should we do from now on, where should we go?
What should we look at?

From finger to finger, from mouth to mouth
From skin to skin, we gathered our hearts
But it served no kind of purpose
They scatter all over the place
I will comb your black tangled hair
I want to see how much you'll smile

If the rain doesn't let up at this rate
I can't walk anymore, I'll drown
Let's paddle a small boat and go, just the two of us
Come, let's go to the ocean, let's go to the forest, let's go see the white horizon
I want to see the glittering sand that you kicked barefoot again
That day was like that too, wasn't it?
------------------------
Notes:
Kobayashi once tweeted about a French film called "37°2 le matin" (Betty Blue in English) and might've named the title of the song after it. I don't know much more than that. I always thought it might've had some relation with the body temperature though so I'm not sure.

THE NOVEMBERS - はじまりの教会 (Hajimari no kyoukai)

Lyrics: Yusuke Kobayashi
Music: THE NOVEMBERS

Kanji: はじまりの教会
もういいんだ 行ってもいいんだ
もういいんた 言ってもいいんだ
降りられないメリーゴーラウンドを降りたい
今瓦礫の上へ

自由の終わりと理由の終わりへ行こうよ
喜んだり悲しんだりするんだよ

もういいんだ 知ってもいいんだ
降りられないメリーゴーラウンドを降りて
今は瓦礫の上へ

自由の終わりと理由の終わりへ行こうよ

English: The Church of Beginnings
It's alright, it's alright for you to go
It's alright, it's alright for you to say it
I want to get off this inescapable merry-go-round
And head to the top of the rubble now

Let's go to the end of freedom, and to the end of reason
We'll be happy, and we'll be sad together

It's alright, it's alright for you to know
I'll get off this inescapable merry-go-round
And head to the top of the rubble now

Let's go to the end of freedom, and to the end of reason
So that we'll be happy, so that we'll be sad together
If something is given to me, only because it can be given[1]
It gets stolen from me, only because it can be stolen, still[1]
I just want to be happy, I just want to be sad together
Isn't that alright
Isn't that alright? For now at least

"The horizon is very far," I heard from someone
There's no such thing as being able to see it even if you go to a dark area

Translation notes:
[1] I had trouble translating these lines and it took me a while to understand what they meant in the original Japanese, so hopefully I translated them correctly.
